We had a very fun weekend; we decided not to worry about naps for once and go on a little adventure to Sequim. On our way there, we stopped at this great little place for lunch. It's about 4 or 5 train cars that have been fixed up into a restaurant/candy store. We thought we'd have to settle for hotdogs and fish and chips, but were pleasantly surprised when the menu included things like grilled salmon or portabello mushrooms on foccacia. The kids ate heartily (tuna sandwich and clam chowder and melon) and then were thrilled that one WHOLE train car was a candy store! I let them pick out a couple of pieces – gummy worms, gummy penquins and sharks.
We headed on to the Olympic Game Park; you drive your car through this "natural environment" and feed wild animals cheap bread (you buy it at entry for $2/loaf). It's a little weird, and you stop to think about these poor animals that spend their lives sticking their heads in peoples cars all day long to get fed processed food. But then again, a lot of these animals have been rescues or retired from Hollywood, and they are having no problem procreating, so perhaps they aren't too bad off. It does seem like a "only in America" kind of thing, but then I remembered going to a similar thing in Demnark. That aside, the girls LOVED it. They were in AWE and couldn't stop laughing. We had a few good laughs, ourselves. I mean, these giant slobbery yak mouths are right in your face! It was hilarious!
After that, we headed to the Dungeness Sand Spit. It was a short 1/2 mile hike through the woods, and suddenly you're at the beach, and walking down a sandspit over 5 miles long! Of course, at this time of the day, we didn't get too far down. But again, the kids were in awe; Simone was literally rolling in the sand and saying "Wow! Wow!" They played with sticks and rocks and climbed on logs. It was incredibly warm and NOT windy (which is typical) and the view was stunning. On one side you see the Olympics and across the water, you can see Canada. Of course, the day wouldn't be complete without a meltdown. Amazingly, it wasn't Simone! And it was 5:15 and she hadn't napped yet! It was a loooong walk back to the car, and within 5 minutes of leaving, they were both asleep. We decided not to stop for dinner until we were close to home (let 'em sleep!) But we did get home around 8:00 and everyone had a fantastic day!
